NACOG Director’s Award – Yavapai County Board of Supervisors, presented by Executive Director Teri Drew to Supervisors Tom Thurman and Randy Garrison on behalf of the Board, for their guidance, leadership and outstanding partnership – providing innovative workforce solutions to the Yavapai County Workforce Development Area.
The following Awards represent outstanding achievement through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunities Act (WIOA) Title I Program through NACOG and the ARIZONA@WORK One Stop Centers throughout the 2017-2018 Program Year.
Chairman’s Innovation Award – John Hancock Barbershop, Grant Quesada and Jesse Burke, owners.
John Hancock Barbershop has done at least 5 contracts with NACOG this year and has a retention rate of 100% for their On-the-Job trainings for Manager, Assistant Manager and Barbers. Grant Quesada, owner of John Hancock Barbershop, has a strategic business model consisting of hiring local veterans and is committed to training and offering a sustaining wage. All individuals that have completed training have been offered advancement opportunities, most making beyond $20 per hour.
Large Employer of the Year – European Techniques, Tom and Marie Corkery, owners - Receiving the award on behalf of the owners was Christin Grady.
European Techniques has hired 32 NACOG clients this past Program Year, with an 82% retention rate. They have signed more commercial accounts which have required creating new positions to meet the production demand, and they now employ over 140 employees, bringing an additional 40 well-paying positions with full benefits to the area.
Christin is a success story on NACOG’s On-the-Job Training as well. She now serves as Office Manager at European Techniques.
Small Employer of the Year – RESA Wearables Inc., Glen Hinshaw, owner, also represented by John Dahl.
RESA Wearables, Inc. Is a new manufacturing company that had an innovative and successful business plan to hire over 100 new employees in the Prescott area within a year. Their initial contract was for 4 individuals, since then they hired 39 NACOG On-the-Job Training clients and had 37 individuals obtain certificate training in 3-D technical skills. They achieved a 99% retention rate for training and employment which provided average wages starting at $25 per hour! The economic benefit to the community is approximately $1.3 million return on investment in direct wage benefit. RESA Wearables, Inc. started with 6 employees and now has over 200 employees.
Adult Participant of the Year – Lisa Forsher, RESA Wearables, Inc.
Ms. Forsher is an integral part of the RESA Wearables, Inc. team. Her quick aptitude and dedication helped move RESA Wearables forward and she is now their Office Manager/Corporate Accountant. Ms. Forsher has inspired others to succeed in their career path by mentoring and encouraging employees with RESA Wearables, Inc. And NACOG.
Youth Participant of the Year – Pei-Wen Yang
Pei-Wen Yang (was not able to attend) Ms. Yang worked hard and persevered to obtain workplace skills through the Summer Youth Program at NACOG. She completed two sessions of the Summer Youth Program, one with the Yavapai County Board of Supervisors and one with the Mingus Union High School. Last month, Ms. Yang graduated from Mingus Union High School ranking 3rd in her class and she is going to be attending UC San Diego this coming fall. Through her dedication and academic achievement she is destined for success in her future career.
Veteran Participant of the Year – Jon Ricketts, John Hancock Barbershop
Mr. Ricketts served his country in the United States Army from 2013 to 2017 as a Watercraft Engineer, receiving several medals and ribbons prior to receiving an Honorable Discharge. He interviewed for a Front Desk position at John Hancock Barbershop and through NACOG’s On-the-Job Training assistance learned management skills and is now an Assistant Manager for John Hancock Barbershop.
Trainee of the Year – Mary Sorthun Williams
Ms. Sorthum Williams perservered and overcame obstacles to complete the 14-week RESA Wearables, Inc. training classes at Yavapai College. She is a full-time production technician with RESA Wearables and has earned self-sufficiency.
