Building relationships and making a difference in the lives of youth.
Prescott, Arizona –– This year the YMCA is teaching an accredited class for Prescott High School students. The Water Fitness and Lifeguarding Class focuses on swim skills and endurance during the first semester and lifeguarding skills during the second semester. Students can even earn an American Red Cross Lifeguarding certificate at the end of the year.
The YMCA and PHS have always had a great working relationship and this class continues the tradition. The idea was spearheaded by former Aquatics Director Kelly Winkels and brought to life by our current Aquatics Director Lacey Stone. Lacey has the pleasure of working closely with PHS Vice Principal Clark Tenney to make sure everything runs smoothly.
The first day of school, Lacey had mostly non-swimmers in class. After two and a half months she says we now have students who can swim all 4 competitive strokes: freestyle, butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke. They are improving their skills and working on endurance and will be ready for their second semester of Lifeguarding skills.
“I feel the class is a healthy way to start the day and it helps students focus on schoolwork the rest of the day. They also receive valuable job and life skills in class which helps them make positive and healthy choices,” said Lacey Stone, YMCA Aquatics Director.
The Y believes in keeping kids safe in, on and around water. Besides this class for PHS students, the YMCA offers swim lessons year-round for children 6 months up to and including adults.
