Roughrider Spirit Days brings community together in support of students, athletes

Yavapai College students are reinvesting the energy and enthusiasm that accompany the start of fall semester during a week of invigorating and motivational activities for the entire community.

Roughrider Spirit Days will be held Sept. 12-15 at the YC Prescott campus (1100 E. Sheldon St.) and feature fan-appreciation and drug-awareness activities and athletics contests. Highlighting the four-day celebration of college and community is an appearance by former major league baseball player Willie Mays Aikens. The one-time Kansas City Royals slugger will share his inspirational story of baseball stardom derailed by drug abuse at 6 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center.

“Willie’s story of fame, fortune, devastating loss and resurgence is a powerful one and we are pleased that he accepted our invitation to bring his message of hope and honor to Yavapai College,” said Janice Soutee, YC Student Engagement and Activities Coordinator. All are invited to the Aikens appearance, although seating is limited. Free tickets are available by contacting Soutee at (928) 776-2125.

Along with helping steer all ages away from the scourge of drugs, Roughrider Spirit Days aims to bring the community together in support of YC students and the YC soccer and volleyball teams. A number of Spirit Days events revolve around home games and both teams will be center stage throughout the week.
