Sales, Menus & Recipes: The Air Fryer
Featured

13 February 2020

What is an air fryer, how does it work and is it worthwhile?

The air fryer was introduced in 2010 by Phillips and immediately began to grab a lot of attention in the cooking press and community. It promised deep fried taste with hardly any oil, healthier, cheaper and cleaner than deep frying.

An air fryer is essentially a countertop convection oven. It circulates very hot air around food, both cooking and crisping it. Its’ footprint is about equivalent to that of a slow cooker. There are now very many models to choose from with prices ranging from about $60 to over $300. If you watch for sales you can sometimes pick up good bargains. And don’t forget to check our numerous thrift stores, as some may have decided to do without this innovation.

As with most appliances, its’ usefulness depends on your needs. Most have a limited capacity, so if you need to make heaps of food at a time you will need an expensive large model. But if you are cooking for 1-3 people, the more modest sized ones will be good. If you are someone who never turns on their oven in the summertime an air fryer may be just what you need as it does not heat up the house much.

It is surprising what an air fryer can do. In addition to making crispy potatoes it can do tasks from minor baking to making kale chips.

These videos will give you some idea of what the air fryer can and can’t do:
