Opinion: Fake News is the Enemy of the American People

25 November 2018

A free press is essential to our democratic republic.

The whining from the media and leftist politicians, even Fox News, about President Trump saying that the “fake news media is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American people” is akin to scraping fingernails across a chalkboard. (For those too young to know what a chalkboard is, it was what was used in schools before the invention of the whiteboard.) It was a most irritating screech that would cause one to wince. The media's hyperbole is beyond believable. And it's been going on for more than a year. President Trump made the tweet in February of 2017.

Progressives and the main stream media acted as if President Trump had torn up the First Amendment and was about to set fire to the rest of the Constitution. Their response was as predictable as it was vacuous. It also lent credence to the President's accusation.

While Trump tweeted that “fake news media” is the enemy of the American people, both the politicians and press responded to a statement that the President never made. He never said a free press was the enemy of the American people. He never said the media was the enemy. By changing the whole thrust of the President's statement, they are either providing evidence that he is correct and/or they are part of the fake news media.

A free press is essential to our democratic republic. It should keep politicians, bureaucrats, businesses and other groups and organizations honest. It should be the watchdog for our citizenry. It should be the polar opposite of what Pravda was to the people of the old USSR. Pravda, which means truth in Russian, was the mouth piece for the communist government of Russia. It always sided with the communist government.

It is the obligation of a free press to present the facts, all the facts, in such a way as to at least appear to be unbiased. When they take sides and fail to report all of the facts, they are not doing their duty. Studies from Harvard and the Washington Post have concluded that Trump's coverage by major news outlets is 91 to 93% negative. This shows and obvious bias. They are reporting and emphasizing negatives and minimizing or just not reporting positive achievements. Sometimes they even ascribe to the Obama Administration, some of Trump's successes, like the lowering of the unemployment rate and the booming economy.

This also demonstrates that this is not merely an occasional oversight, but a purposeful action not to show both sides of issues and political acts and accomplishments. It is so one sided as to be an affront to the American people. Such near total partisan reporting amounts to fake news. That is something enemies do to keep the people unaware of what is actually happening in their government.

More than a century ago, the media consisted primarily of newspapers and periodical magazines. A quote often attributed to Mark Twain in his day could be applied to much of the main stream media today. “If you don't read the newspaper, you're uninformed. If you read the newspaper, you're misinformed.”
