Head-on Accident on 89A Sends 4 to Medical Centers

06 May 2016   Jayson Coil

The force of the impact caused rebar to fly through the windshield.

At 15:24 the Sedona Fire District was dispatched to a Motor Vehicle Accident on Highway 89A in Oak Creek Canyon South of the Trout Farm.  Two minutes later, at 15:26 the first SFD unit (A541) arrived on scene and began triage and treatment.

The vehicles, a full size van and a Prius had collided head on.

In all, 3 Sedona Fire Engines, 3 Ambulances, and 1 medical helicopter from Guardian Air transported the 4 occupants of the vehicles to Verde Valley Medical Center and Flagstaff Medical Center, 2 with serious injuries.  The force of the impact caused lengths of rebar inside the van to fly through the front windshield.

Fortunately the rebar missed the occupants, but it serves as a good reminder to the additional risk presented by flying objects inside a vehicle.

After all patients were transported Sedona Fire personnel used a solution called biosolve, a hydrocarbon mitigation agent, to safely clean up the fluids and reduce the risk of environmental damage. The accident blocked both north and south bound lanes of Hwy 89A and the highway remained closed about an hour and a half.  In addition to Sedona Fire, Sedona PD and DPS responded.
