Last night, Prescott experienced its first-ever Water Lantern Festival at Watson Lake.

Close to 2000 people arrived to create their own unique lanterns and then to set them afloat on the lake.

Wondering what a Water Lantern Festival is? On the Water Lantern Festival website, the description reads, "Water Lantern Festival is filled with fun, happiness, hope, and great memories that you'll cherish for a lifetime. This is a family friendly event that can be shared by everyone. Friends, families, neighbors, and lots of people that you haven't met can come together to create a peaceful, memorable experience.”

Taylor Bremner is an independent contractor for the Water Lantern Festival organization, and he took time to speak with Deb Gallegos, from This Is Prescott, about the event. "We go all over the nation with this group and sometimes we have a different, melting pot of a crew. But we all have the same object in mind and we really strive for it, I think. Trying to make a difference in the world… a good, positive difference.”

The Water Lantern Festival folks are careful about not leaving a long-term impact on the lake, however. As explained on their Facebook page, "We as the Water Lantern Festival have a strong eco-friendly value to our environment by keeping it safe and healthy. We create a buoy line in the water so that we are able to keep track of every lantern released. After the event, our team and volunteers do a sweep of the entire venue to pick up trash/left over debris, as well as all of the lanterns. Lanterns are made from rice paper and wood so they are also eco-friendly and easily recycled! Additionally, we make one final sweep the following day after the event to make sure that nothing has been left behind and everything is cleaned up.”
