On Saturday Sept. 28 Prescott Fire Department played host to a “Little’s Fire Academy” for Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters. Over 30 Littles and Bigs came to the department’s drill grounds on Sundog Ranch Road to learn about life as a first responder. They were able to witness a Native Air helicopter land and were then given a tour by the flight crew. Prescott Fire’s Chief Dennis Light even served as a mock patient to demonstrate where the injured party would ride on the helicopter.
Attendees were then given tours of three of the department’s apparatus; an engine, a ladder truck, and the department’s original 1926 American LaFrance pumper. To wrap up the fun, they took rides on the pumper, dressed in firefighting turnout gear, and even shot cones out of the windows of the training tower with a hose line.
The day’s activities were supported by the department’s personnel as well as their Fire Explorers youth program. Native Air treated everyone to lunch and Allegra Printing provided T-shirts to the attendees. Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters is always seeking Bigs to match up with Littles and can be contacted at 928-778-5135.
