Universal Testing for COVID-19 - an Expensive Endeavor
The White House is now balancing the risk to public health and the risk to economic welfare posed by the coronavirus crisis. Yet a solution could be on the horizon. The key is to make cheap, rapid testing available to every individual, regardless of symptoms.
Suppose testing involves $100 in personal protective equipment (PPE) and time costs for the individual who obtains the sample. Taken together, consider $100 for viral testing plus $100 for antibody testing and another $100 for PPE and labor, and costs would run about $300 per person. Multiply that by the U.S. population of about 330 million and you get a price tag of some $99 billion.
Of course, the best outcome would be the development of a vaccine. Once it is approved by the Food and Drug Administration, manufactured en masse, and ready for nationwide deployment, everyone can be vaccinated before returning to work and congregating with others.
Until then, please stay home, stay healthy and stay connected.
