It’s learning with a twist
Parents can learn about a new opportunity for 7th and 8th graders. Glassford Hill Middle School will be offering the I-Choose Academy next year. This transformational school model will allow students to have access to personalized learning and online learning resources 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Chromebooks will be issued to each student for use in and out of class and core content is delivered by blended, flipped and online instruction. Open houses on the I-Choose Academy are scheduled for tonight (Wednesday) at Granville Elementary on Stover Drive and tomorrow night (Thursday) at Bradshaw Mountain High School Thursday night. All open house meetings start at 6. Applications that are available at gh.Humboldtunified.com are due this Friday. They can be turned in to any school front office. The application process is open to students who aren’t currently attending a Humboldt Unified school.
Tuesday was Election Day in Yavapai County, but the next elections in Dewey-Humboldt aren’t until August and November. According to Town Clerk Julie Gibson, the Town must start the process of electing or reelecting a Mayor and 3 Council members. During its meeting at Town Hall on Highway 69, Town Council considered a Call to Election. The 2 year term of Mayor Terry Nolan and the 4 year terms of Council members Jack Hamilton, Mark McBrady and Doug Treadaway are ending on December 6th. The Primary Election is August 28th and if there are no clear winners in that election, a General Election will be held November 6th. Candidate packets have been available since April 30th. Those who plan on running for Mayor or Council have until 5 pm on May 30th to file their nomination papers.
Kirkland School District Board vacancy will not be filled until the election
Yavapai County School Superintendent Tim Carter won’t be filling a school board vacancy at this time. There’s a vacancy on the Kirkland Elementary School District Board due to the resignation of Cathi Cobey. Cobey didn’t give a specific reason, but did mention since there are other willing and interested people in the community, it’s time for her to retire. Because this vacancy is close to the filing deadline for the upcoming November General Election, Carter has decided it’s in the best interest of all involved to wait until the nomination and election process is done to make an appointment. The appointment, which is expected to be made in mid-November after the canvassing of the election, will be of the non-incumbent candidate who receives the highest number of votes. Anyone who is interested in running for election to the Kirkland Elementary School District Board is asked to call Yavapai County School Elections Coordinator Jenn Nelson at 771-3326 or Carter at (928) 925-6560.
