Roughriders Split Opening Doubleheader

Yavapai Roughriders Split ACCAC Opener

The Roughrider baseball team split their ACCAC opening doubleheader with South Mountain Community College Saturday afternoon in Phoenix. YC won the first game 5-3 and dropped the second game 10-0. Yavapai is now 8-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. South Mountain has a 10-6 record and 1-1 in league action.

In the opener, sophomore Marcus Christy threw 4.1 solid innings and Christian Encarnacion-Brand hit a three-run home run to help secure the victory.

Christy surrendered three runs on four hits while striking out three batters. Bobby Meza threw the final 2.2 innings to record the save.

Down 2-1 in the in the top of the fourth inning, Encarnacion-Strand took a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence for the game winning hit. South Mountain put a lone run on the board in the bottom of the fifth to pull the Cougars to within one. In the top of the seventh, Tommy Sacco chased home Channy Ortiz with a sacrifice fly for an insurance run. Meza shut the door in the bottom of the inning to secure the victory.

Encarnacion-Strand was 2 for 4 with three runs batted in. Gianni Tomasi and Sacco each had a hit with an RBI.

The Roughrider offense threw blanks in the second game with only Logan Williams, Jake Robson and Channy Ortiz getting hits. Williams was 2 for 3.

Yavapai’s pitching gave up ten earned runs on ten hits.

YC continues conference play on Tuesday, February 19th in Scottsdale against Scottsdale Community College. The doubleheader will begin at 12:00 PM.
