The Greenway Demons came out ready to play in their first home playoff game in 14 seasons, and they outscored the Prescott Badgers 40-29, in the first round of the Division 4 state playoffs. It was the first time in six seasons that the Badgers had made the playoffs, and unforuntately, it was a quick exit.
The Demons put a 24 spot on a good Badger defense in the opening quarter. Prescott got off the mat and battled back to get within five points near the end of the third quarter, but could never catch the Demons.
Greenway jumped on top quick, running just five plays and taking only 73 seconds to do it. TJ Murphy's 10 yard run capped off the 80 yard drive. Brandon Woodland added the extra point and with 10:47 left in the first quarter the Demons led 7-0.
The Badgers first possession ended near midfield, when on a third down play, Sylas Espitia got held up in traffic, and got the ball stripped for the first turnover. The Greenway offense got right back in attack mode, moving down the field again, but this time the Badger defense rose up forcing the Demons to a Brandon Woodland 17 yard field goal to go up 10-0 with 6:52 in the quarter.
After a Badger punt, Demons quarterback Tyler Duncan was forced out of the pocket and managed to throw a strike to Kolbe Pesnell for a 42 yard touchdown play to go up 17-0 with still 4:20 left in the first quarter.
Prescott was able to put a drive together capped off by an Austin Clark run up the middle for a 5 yard score. Bryce Peters extra point attempt just missed, cutting the deficit to 17-6 with 2:55 on the clock.
Greenway scored on their third five play drive of the game when Duncan rolled away from the Badger defenders and reached the end zone, making it 24-6 with still 2:18 left in quarter number one.
Things quieted down and the dust settled in the second quarter, as the Prescott defense got it together and the Demons ran out of a little gas.
The Badgers, early in the second quarter tried a flea flicker play, but the Aaron Greene's pass was over the head of Dellin Boyd.
Prescott trailing 24-6 midway through the second quarter, had a golden opportunity to get a much needed touchdown after Aaron Greene blocked the punt. The Badgers took over at the Demons 12, but three plays later had to settle for a 20 yard field goal by Bryce Peters.
After a Greenway three and out with 1:23 on the clock, Prescott let the punt fall to the ground, and roll an additional 12 yards to the Badger 6. Austin Clark was sacked as time an our in the first half. The teams headed to the locker room with Greenway up 24-9.
Prescott got the ball to start the third quarter and began to move the ball. Then in an instant things changed, when Haydon Levenda picked off a pass as Badger receiver Garrett Fenderson juggled the ball thrown by Austion Clark, taking it the other way to the Badger six. The Prescott defense stood tall, holding the Demons to a 17 yard field goal. Trailing 27-9, the Badgers were bound and determined to score. Going back to the air, Clark hit Dellin Boyd on sideline for a 12 yard strike to make it 27-16 with 5:36 remaining in the third quarter.
The defense created more havoc for quarterback Tyler Duncan, forcing him to release the ball before he clearly wanted to. Once again the Demons had to punt the ball back to the Badgers.
The offense showed its stuff once again when Jovanni Ruiz caught an 8 yard Austin Clark pass, turning up sideline to get into the end zone. The Badgers opted for the two point conversion, trailing 27-22, but Austin Clark was ruled inches short, leaving the deficit at five, with 1:24 left in the third quarter.
Prescott had momentum and it appeared that they were in position to pull this thing out, but it was not to be. The Demons got the ball and on a crucial third down was awarded a gift. A bad call (face mask) on the Badgers extended a Greenway drive, placing the ball inside the Badger 20. Three plays later, TJ Murphy plowed his way into the end zone, giving Greenway a 34-22 lead with 11 minutes to play.
The Badger moved the ball to midfield, but turned it over on downs, when Brayden Nelson was unable to come up with the ball on an Austin Clark pass. Nelson, who was clearly interferred with on the play, did not get the call. Greenway took advantage of the short field and took only five plays to score again. Once again it was TJ Murphy who rumbled in from 8 yards out to extend the Demons lead to 40-22 with 9:04 left.
The Badgers continued to battle. Austin Clark threw a 43 yard pass down the far sideline to Jacob Police, who battled the defender and came up with the ball for the touchdown. Peters once again added the PAT, cutting the Demon lead to 40-29 with 7:09 on the clock.
Greenway kept the ball on the ground to burn precious seconds off the clock. The Prescott defense did get another stop to get the ball back, but the Badgers could not sustain the drive, turning the ball over on downs yet again, as the fourth down pass from a battered Austin Clark fell incomplete, ending the Prescott season.
Coach Cody Collett said, "I want to congratulate this team in making the playoffs for the first time in six years, also the seniors for all their hard work and accomplishments."
Greenway was led by their versatile QB Tyler Duncan, who completed 11-19, for 193 yard and one touchdown. Duncan rushed for 125 yards, one touchdown on 15 carries. TJ Murphy was a workhorse with 135 yards on 26 carries and three touchdowns. Five receivers caught balls thrown by Duncan, led by Kolbe Pesnell with four receptions for 93 yards and one touchdown.
The Badgers Austin Clark, who spent the game under a lot of defensive pressure completed 7-21 with 3 touchdowns. Clark rushed 26 times for 138 yards and one TD. Austin finished his senior record setting season with 1949 yards rushing and 24 touchdowns, passing Brady Mengarelli who finished the 2012 season with 1940 yards and 22 touchdowns, also in 11 games. Only two other players ran the ball, senior Ean Porter 6-20 and Syals Espitia 8-20. Three receivers all scored one touchdown each in the second half. They were Dellin Boyd 3 catches 37 yards, Jacob Police 2-67, and Jovanni Ruiz 2-16. Colton Amos had 8 solo tackles and a combined total of 22, ending an amazing season on the defenisive side of the ball, and setting the all time Badger tackling record of 194 in the process. Another record was set by Bryce Peters who made 87% of his kicks, making 34-39 extra points, and 13-15 field goals, for a total of 73 points.
The Demons (11-1) will pay a visit to Desert Edge next Friday night. The Badgers end their season at (7-4).
