Parent's 24 points leads comeback in foul ridden contest

A home win that did not come easy, but the Prescott Badgers broke through as they knocked off a feisty Mohave Thunderbird team 60-57, in the Badger Dome Friday night. There were a total of 48 fouls, 28 by the Badgers, that included three technical fouls.

The scored see-sawed from the get go. Prescott led 9-7 when Korey Schwartz picked up his second personal foul with 2:58 left in the first quarter. The Thunderbirds took the lead back on a three by Brian Ising, as they went on a 9-0 run, which ended when Jason Parent knocked down a three pointer, but the Badgers still trailed 16-12.

In a very odd second quarter, Mohave would have only two players score, Jacodyn Eastman (5), and Brian Ising (9), would score all their points from the free throw line. A technical on the Badger bench added to the Thunderbirds score as they made both free throws to make it 18-12. Mohave went into the double bonus as the Badgers reached 10 fouls with 4:14 left in the seond quarter. A pair of baskets by Jason Parent pulled the Badgers within one at 23-22 with 3:20 left in quarter. A minute later, Parent fed Dellin Boyd under the basket to trim the Thunderbirds lead to 25-24.

Things fot a little heated with :53 left in the half. Right after Jason Parent was fouled as he went to the basket. Colin Hicks was called for an technical foul when Brian Ising pulled a flop to the floor, which the officials thought was an apparent push. Hicks was then ejected from the game. That gave Mohave four free throws and the ball. The Badgers trailed 32-27 in a half that the three officials called a total of 27 fouls.

Prescott fell behind 36-29 with Schwartz scoring the only Badger basket in the first three minutes of the third quarter. Schwartz, who finished with 14 points, 9 rebounds, and Parent pulled the Badgers within three, 39-36 with 2:26 left. The Badgers ended the quarter with a basket by Aydan McKenna after a possession that included for missed shots prior to the basket.

Mohave led 42-40 to start the fourth and final quarter. Schwartz tied the game with 7:50 left. After a pair of golden opportunities to take the lead, the Thunderbirds pulled back on top 45-42. Schwartz was called for an offensive foul, his fourth, on a relentless attack to get the ball in the basket, with just under five minutes remaining. Schwartz returned to the floor with 3:21 left and the Badgers down 50-45.

After a steal, Parent, who scored a game high 24 points, nailed a three from the corner to cut the deficit to 51-50. Moments later it was Parent again for three, this time to tie the game at 53, with 1:53 left.

Aydan McKenna's basket gave Prescott the lead 55-53 with 1:27 to play. McKenna then wrestled the ball away from a Mohave player and called a timeout. Dellin Boyd, who scored 11, got the ball to Jason Parent, who hit a three the corner, his fourth, to increase the lead to 58-53, and only :46 on the clock.

A defensive breakdown let the Thunderbirds get a layup, then Eastman's drive to the basket resulted in a layup, bringing Mohave back to within one at 58-57.

Schwartz was fouled with :09 left and came through by making both free throws to increase the lead to 60-57. Schwartz said, "It's great to get a region win at home, our first of the season."We're just looking to build off of this win." Asked about winning the battle in the paint, Schwartz added, "It was tough in there, we just keep getting rebounds and putting up shots, hoping they would go in."

Mohave's shot at the buzzer, clanked off the rim, giving the Badgers the three point win.

Prescott coach Travis Stedman said, "It was really nice to get this win. The guys really wanted this one at home and really worked hard to get it."

The Badgers will be at Peoria next Tuesday, before returning home to face Mingus on Friday. Both games at 7pm..
