Prescott Badgers (7-4 last season) at Desert Edge Scorpions (9-4)
The Prescott Badgers will open the 2019 high school football season at Desert Edge in Goodyear tonight at 7pm.
The Badgers are (0-3) versus the Scorpions after suffering a 40-17 setback last season in Prescott. The game was a close one through the first half. In 2014, Prescott fell 54-7 and in 2013, the Badgers lost a tough 21-19 game at home.
Desert Edge finished (9-4) last season, after losing to eventual 4A champion Saguaro 61-6 in the semifinals. The Scorpions are led by Adryan Lara, who as a freshman threw for 1485 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also was picked off 10 times in 173 attempts. Marques Miller is the lone returning rusher who got a fair amount of game time scoring four touchdowns and 337 yards on the ground. Jihad Marks is the go to guy on passes, hauling in 65 tosses for 1163 yards and 15 TDs.
Prescott will start Dellin Boyd at quarterback. The senior had limited time at that position last year, playing behind Austin Clark. Coach Cody Collett said, "Dellin is a guy who stays positive when confronted with diversity, and we will need him to be that guy for this game." The Badgers will use multiple backs to carry the ball led by Sylas Espitia 96 carries, 500 yards, one touchdown, and Sam Giordan 38-325, 5 touchdowns. Ironically Dellin Boyd led the team in pass receptions last season. Brayden Nelson 13-95, Jacob Police, and Trey Kohler all return.
Defensively, Aaron Greene returns to continue assaulting backfields. Greene was huge on defense last season, wreaking havoc on many plays including a few blocked punts.
Prescott will be playing in hot conditions in the valley in which Coach Collett said, "The key will be keeping the guys hydrated. We scrimmaged at Tempe High School last week on purpose to give our team a taste of what it will be like."
Game time is at 7pm, with a forecasted temperature of 99*.
Estrella Foothills Wolves (6-5) at Bradshaw Mountain Bears (8-3), 7pm
The Bears made the opening game trip in 2018 to Goodyear, and came home with a 20-13 win. Both teams fell in the first round of the playoffs last season. The Wolves took a lopsided 49-0 loss at eventual 4A champion Saguaro, while the Bears fell 21-17 to league foe Mingus in a regular season rematch.
Parker Broncs (6-4) at Chino Valley Cougars (4-6), 7pm
It has been nearly a decade since the two teams have met on the gridiron. In 2010, Parker paid a visit to Chino Valley and took home a 19-7 win. The Broncs made the playoffs last season, falling to Morenci 57-6 in the first round.
