19 October 2019

Bradshaw Mountain beats up Mingus, Chino Valley suffers another close loss

Prescott Badgers 56, Mohave Thunderbirds 0

The Prescott Badgers put up 390 of total offense and 42 points in the first half to roll to a 56-0 win over the Mohave Thunderbirds, on Senior Night at Prescott High School.

Ethan Pena accounted for three first half touchdowns, and quarterback Dellin Boyd ran for two and threw fir another in the huge first half.

The Badgers did not take long to jump on top. Dellin Boyd broke open a run on the near side, going 65 yards. Clay Gross added the first of his 8 extra points, to give Prescott a 7-0 lead less than a minute into the game.

Mohave struggled all night to move the ball, going three and out numerous times, thanks to the smothering Badger defense.

Ethan Pena scored from 3 yards out to make it 14-0 at 8:28. Brayden Nelson caught a beautifully thrown ball by Dellin Boyd, taking it 61 yards to the house with 5:23 left in the first quarter to put the Badgers up 21-0. Pena added a 4 yard run , and after 12 minutes, it was 28-0.

Pena added a 24 yard score, followed by Sylas Espitia's 10 yard run to make it 42-0 at the half.

A running clock made the second half go very quickly, but the Badgers added a touchdown in each of the final two quarters. Dellin Boyd's 1 yard run in the third, and freshman Cody Leopold's 35 yard run completed the scoring.

Luke Macauslin had a night, recovering 2 fumbles and picking off a Mohave pass, all in the second half.  Desmond Bennett picked up a fumble in the final seconds of the first half, returning it to inside the Thunderbirds 10 yard line as the clock ran out.

Prescott improves to (3-1) in the Grand Canyon Region, and (5-3) overall. The Badgers will pay a visit to Lee Williams, in Kingman, next Friday at 7pm. Mohave will host Bradshaw Mountain.

Bradshaw Mountain Bears 64, Mingus Marauders  7

It became obvious very early that the Bears had some left over frustrations regarding their last second loss to rival Prescott last week. Bradshaw Mountain put up 34 points in the first quarter Friday night, beating the winless Mingus Marauders 64-7.

Mingus took the opening kickoff and it all went down hill from there for the Marauders. Danile Gobiel returned a blocked punt 25 yards and when Josh Grant added the PAT, it was 7-0 Bears.

Moises Hernandez scored on a 6 yard run to make it 14-0. On the next Mingus possession, Daniel Gobiel intercepted a pass returning it to the Mingus 40. Gobiel would make his presence felt again, picking up a loose ball, taking it 35 yards for the score. Hernandez would score again on a 14 yard run to make it 27-0, still with five minutes left in the opening quarter. Hernandez added his third touchdown on a 28 yard scamper to lead 34-0 after just one quarter.

Josh Grant kicked a 20 yard field goal with eight minutes left in the second to increase the Bradshaw Mountain lead to 37-0. Quarterback Hernandez threw a 65 yard touchdown pass to Francisco Valentin to make it 44-0 at the half.

Hernandez hit Josh Grant on a 45 yard touchdown pass with nine minutes left in the third to increase the score to 51-0. Hernandez ran for his fourth rushing touchdown of the night on a 13 yard run with three minutes left in the third quarter, and it was 58-0.

Mingus was finally able to break through on a 13 yard touchdown pass with five minutes remaining. Bradshaw Mountain added one more touchdown for good measure in the final minute when Josh Grant ran in from 4 yards out.

The Bears improve to (2-3) in the Grand Canyon Region, and (4-5) overall. They will travel to face Mohave in Bullhead City, next Friday in their final game of the season. Mingus drops to (0-4) and (0-8), and will host Flagstaff next Friday.

Wickenburg Wranglers 15, Chino Valley Cougars 13

The Cougars suffered another tough loss, this time at home, in a 15-13 setback to the Wickenburg Wranglers.

Trevor Gianfrancesco put the Cougars up 7-0 with a 2 yard run with seven minutes in the opening quarter. Tyler Ness added the equalizer for Wickenburg a minute into the second quarter.

The action heated up in the fourth quarter with the game tied at seven.

The Cougars took  a 13-7 lead on a 20 yard run by Jayden Smith. The extra point attempt failed.

Wickenburg's Troy Adamo scored the tying touchdown with about five minutes remaining, on a 42 yard pass from Cologero Dicamillo. A two point conversion on a pass, turned out to be the deciding factor.

Chino Valley had some time left and began their drive when Jayden Smith hit Jacob Gilpin on a pass play to the Wickenburg 35. Penalties and yards lost hurt the Cougars down the stretch, resulting in Chino Valley punting back to Wickenburg on 4th and 27.
The Wranglers got the Cougars to jump offsides on 4th and 4, sealing the victory.

Chino Valley falls to (0-3) and (2-7), while Wickenburg improves to (1-1) and (3-4). The Cougars will host River Valley next Friday on Senior Night. Kickoff set for 7pm.
