Girls and Boys Badgers teams both win

Varsity Girls Basketball

Hollie Dalton scored 19 and Kira Reily added 14 as the Prescott Lady Badgers held on to beat the Mingus Marauders 42-37 in the Badger Dome last night.

It was a nip and tuck contest through the first quarter and a half. Mingus led by a point after one quarter, and held a 13-12 lead with just over three minutes left in the second quarter.

The Lady Badgers behind Dalton and Reily went on a 7-0 run to close the half, giving Prescott a 19-13 lead at the break.

The largest lead came with a few seconds left in the third quarter, when Hollie Dalton drove the baseline for a basket and a 36-22 Prescott lead.

Mingus opened the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run before Kira Riley scored to make it 38-29 with 5:50 left.  Aggressive play pulled the Marauders to within 38-34 with 4:20 to play, prompting Lady Badger coach Bobbi Yoder to call timeout.

The Lady Badgers lead was trimmed to 38-35 with 3:56 remaining, but Prescott made the plays they needed to.

"I felt we did well to win, but I thought we could have played better," said Sara Townsend.

Alisa LeBlanc's shot off the glass sealed the deal with 1:20 left, putting Prescott up 42-36. Mingus could only manage a free throw to close out the game.

Coach Bobbi Yoder said, "We struggled in the first half to get our shots to fall and gave up to many second chance opportunities all night. We were able to pull it together the next two quarters to build a 15 point lead going into the fourth. Ultimately, we had way to many turnovers in the fourth quarter and allowed Mingus to get back in it by the end of the game but were able to hang on to the lead for the win. Definitely not pretty, but a win nonetheless. We will get back to work and prepare for a tough Saguaro team on Friday."

The Lady Badgers (1-1) in the Grand Canyon Region, and (2-3) overall, will host Saguaro at 5:30pm this Friday, while Mingus remains winless at (0-2) and (0-5).

Alisa LeBlanc scored 9 points last night in the win over Mingus.

Varsity Boys Basketball

Korey Schwartz scored 20 of his game high 24 points in the second half to lead the Prescott Badgers to a 64-54 win over the visiting Mingus Marauders.

Prescott came out with a lot of energy, jumping on top of the Marauders 8-2 in the first three minutes. Mingus came back and played the Badgers evenly for the rest of the first half.

Sam Yeager set the tone with a pair of long range jumpers, ending the opening quarter with 8 points. When Scooter Schwartz drilled a three from the baseline, Prescott led 24-15 with 3:03 left ion the half.

The Badgers led by as much as nine, but Mingus would pull within five to seven. Prescott held a 27-20 lead at the half.

Korey Schwartz came alive in the final two quarters. It started a minute into the third when he tipped in a basket to extend the lead to 31-20. The Marauders behind Jace Taylor, who led Mingus with 17 points, pulled within 37-31 with 3:22 in the third, but once again the home squad would build the lead back.

The Badgers went up 47-35 on a drive by Jason Parent. Korey Schwartz made a sweet spin move to the basket, and Prescott led 49-35 after three quarters.

Prescott reaped the rewards of the dominating benefit of Korey Schwartz in the paint, as he scored again to start the fourth, followed by a pair of free throws, giving the Badgers their largest lead at 53-35, with 6:50 left.

Mingus would battle back, but never threatened as the Badgers won by ten. Even with the win, some felt that their performance were lacking in a game that they could have dominated from start to finish.

Milap Owens said, "We did not play very well. We had some moments, but played down to there level and we should not be doing that."

One thing that did not hurt the Badgers was their poor free throw shooting.

Coach Travis Stedman said, "I did not think we played at the level we should have. We left a lot of points out there at the line tonight and we let them get way to many second chance opportunities, but I will take it. A region win is a region win."

Prescott  (2-0) in Grand Canyon Region, and (2-3) overall, will play at Saguaro on Friday at 7pm. Mingus drops to (0-1) and (2-10),
