The Peoria Panthers hang on for the victory.

Varsity Boys Basketball

The Prescott Badgers came out and gave the #2 Peoria Panthers all they could handle through three quarters, but pulled away in the final eight minutes to beat the Badgers 82-52. The final score does not indicate a close game, but it was till the final five minutes when the Panthers used a full court press to score at will at the end.

Things started off well when Jason Parent hit a pair of baskets out of the gate to give the Badgers a quick 5-0 lead. After Peoria tied the game at six, Jake Carter nailed a baseline three, providing a 9-6 lead with 4:31 on the first quarter clock. The Panthers were able to take a slim 15-14 lead after the first quarter.

Korey Schwartz muscled his way for two and Prescott led again 16-15, seconds into the second quarter. Peoria went on a quick 6-0 run to lead 21-16 at the 5:33 mark. Coach Travis Stedman called timeout, but the Panthers took advantage of some second chance buckets and led by as many as 11, and led 37-27 at the half.

Baskets by Devin Boyd and Jason Parent cut the deficit to 37-32, just 30 seconds into the third quarter.

Jason Parent glided through the lane producing a finger roll basket to close the gap to 39-36. That was as close as the Badgers would get.

The Panthers applied a full court press, and did some cherry picking, increasing their lead grew to 11 again, 47-36. Jake Carter hit another baseline three to close the gap to 47-39, with 2:55  left in the third.

The defensive highlight of quarter came when Parent skied to block a sure layup by Deandre Petty. Peoria was able to boost their lead to 55-43 at the end of three.

The Badgers fought hard to keep it close, but Peoria's speed and quickness held the final quarter in check for the Panthers. After Milap Owens scored to close the gap to 59-50, it was all Peoria, which continued to press full court for the remainder of the game, which created easy basket opportunities. The Panthers outscored the Badgers 23-2 in the final four minutes.

Jason Parent had a good overall game leading Prescott with 20 points. Korey Schwartz battled inside that resulted in 15 points. The Panthers outscored the Badgers 18-4 at the free throw line.

Prescott coach Travis Stedman said, "We let them dictate the tempo in the second half and that cost us. Plus they beat us off the dribble way to much."

Peoria improved to (17-3) after winning their sixth straight game. Prescott drops to (5-10) overall with the non-region loss. The Badgers resume Grand Canyon Region play Friday, at Mingus. Tip time is 7pm.

Varsity Girls Basketball

The Prescott Lady Badgers attempted to create a comeback similar to their overtime win over Mohave, but it was not to be. Peoria held on to beat the Lady Badgers 35-30 on the road last night.

Hollie Dalton led Prescott with 9 points. The Lady Badgers fell behind 9-6 after one and trailed 15-10 at the half. The Peoria lead grew to 28-14 at the end of the third quarter, before the Prescott offense came to life.

Prescott coach Bobbi Yoder said, "We had a rough third period with to many turnovers tonight in which we dug a 14 point hole for ourselves. We out played and out shot them in the fourth period, but came up a little short. Lots of good shots tonight that we could not get to fall. I am proud of the girls for hanging in there and battling tonight."

The Lady Badgers (7-8) will host Tempe tomorrow night at 5:30pm.
