Over Three-Hundred Gymnasts and Their Families Expected for Meet In August

PRESCOTT- Hundreds of girl gymnasts from the quad cities and across the state will begin their USAG (United States of America Gymnastics) competitive season at the second annual Rev' It Up Invitational meet at the Prescott YMCA in late August.

The meet features athletes from ages six to nineteen competing in olympic categories such as floorboard, beam and vault surrounded by a racing theme complete with checkered flags, tires and dragster cars. The racing theme came about in 2016 when it was decided to move a scheduled conflict meet to the beginning of the season; thus having gymnasts start their engines for the new campaign.

“We try to give it a real race theme to it,” said Prescott YMCA Gymnastics Director Jon Sebastian, who mentioned car inspired music was also played throughout the meet last year. “A lot of kids said it was the most fun meet they had gone to.”

Sebastian noted twelve teams made up of three-hundred kids attended the meet in 2016 and the expectation is to match last year’s numbers, bringing many visitors to the community during the two-day meet.

“We bring in a lot of people who spend the whole weekend (and) spend their money here,” Sebastian said. “So that is always good for the economy here to have early major events.”

Sebastian is a coach of the Prescott YMCA girls’ gymnastics team, The Prescott Lightning, who will be competing in the meet. He says gymnasts are some of the toughest athletes in the world, with some being able to complete 1,000 pushups, and their talent will be on full display at the meet which is open to the public.

“(Attendees see) these young athletes doing things that are just crazy,” Sebastian said. “Some of the routines and some of the skill of these kids is just phenomenal.”

The meet takes place at the Prescott High School gym on Saturday August 26th and Sunday August 27th with three to four sessions each day starting at 8am. Ages four to seven cost $5 per session and $7 per day while ages eight and up cost $12 per session or $20 per day. Sebastian said vendors will be in attendance to serve food.
