Nynke de Vries Smacks 18 Kills, Jailynn Butler Adds 11 Kills in Roughrider Win

After two straight games that went five sets, the Roughriders volleyball team swept Mesa Community College in three sets at home on Wednesday, September 20th, for their second win in a row.

“We were consistent this time,” Roughrider freshman outside hitter Nynke de Vries said. “In the other matches, we were up and down.”

After two 25-19 victories, the Roughriders came out of the break and ended the match with a 25-21 victory in set three.

“We took advantage of opportunities they gave us,” Roughrider volleyball head coach Zachary Shaver said. “We got a lot easy free balls and we converted on those.”

Vries and fellow outside hitter Jailynn Butler had it rolling on the night as Vries smacked 18 kills and Butler added eleven kills on the night.

While it was a fairly clean game with 16 errors, the Roughriders have a philosophy of improving a small bit each game as they work toward a nationals appearance.

“We still had a few too many errors,” Shaver said. “We improved, now we just want to improve a little bit more. That’s our mantra this year, one to three percent better every day.”

Roughriders (8-8, 3-1 ACCAC) hit the road for a matchup against Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Friday, September 22nd, at 7 pm.
