Jose Perez-Flores' Two Goals Wins Roughriders The West District Championship

PRESCOTT- Coming into the game on Saturday, November 4th, at Ken Lindley Field in Prescott, both the Yavapai College and Pima Community College soccer teams knew they had a spot in the nationals. Even with both team’s tickets punched, the matter of the district championship and seeding in the tournament remained as the Roughriders beat Pima Community College 2-0 to win the program’s 21st NJCAA West District Championship.

“They came in here wanting it as much as we did,” Roughrider attacker Jose Perez-Flores said. “Even though we qualified for the nationals, it’s still a championship game and we got to give it our all.”

Perez-Flores continued his playoff success, scoring both Yavapai College goals in the victory to rack up three scores in the district playoffs

“He’s (Perez-Flores) the best player not only on our team but in the league,” Roughriders Head Coach Michael Pantalione said. “He does so many subtle things in a very humbling matter and he just goes about working hard. He has a lot of pride, a lot of personal pride, and he’s always trying to do his best.”

As a freshman, Perez-Flores is enjoying his playoff experience with the Roughriders.

“It’s been really amazing with my teammates, good opponents,” Perez-Flores said. “Just being able to be a part of the experience and having my team here celebrating on our home field.”

Meanwhile, Justin Motzkus spent first 87 minutes in goal for the Roughriders while Spencer Coffin played the final three minutes with the two combining for the team’s 12th shutout of the season.

Pima Community College and Yavapai College both head to the NJCAA National Tournament being held at Mountain Valley Park in Prescott Valley from Monday, November 13th to Saturday, November 18th.

Pantalione and the Roughriders will be looking to capture the program’s 8th national championship.

“We’re going to train throughout the week, work very hard,” Pantalione said. “Get prepared for our next two opponents.”

The brackets for the national tournament have yet to be decided.
