PRESCOTT VALLEY- The Northern Arizona Suns took 100 shots on Tuesday night, November 21st, against the Austin Spurs at the Prescott Valley Event Center but only 35 shots went in the basket as the NAZ fell to the Spurs 101-98.
“It’s hard to win a lot of basketball games when you shoot 35% from the field,” Northern Arizona Suns Head Coach Cody Toppert said. “We’ve got to bring it on both ends of the floor, not just one or the other.”
The NAZ Suns started off with a 20-18 lead after the first quarter and outscored the Austin Spurs by one-point in the second quarter in order to take a three-point advantage into the break.
Things went sour quickly for the NAZ Suns out of halftime, being outscored 11-points by the Spurs and turning the ball over five times.
Just two minutes into the fourth quarter, the Austin Spurs had their biggest lead of the game with a 14-point advantage. However, the NAZ Suns battled back and eventually took a three-point lead with 1:39 remaining in the game.
Facing a deficit and time ticking down, the Spurs’ leading scorer in the game on Tuesday night Darrun Hillard drained four consecutive baskets, including two free-throws, to complete his 38-point performance and send the NAZ Suns to another late defeat.
“He (Hillard) was an NBA player today,” Northern Arizona Suns forward Derrick Jones Jr. said. “They (Austin Spurs) were playing a little bit harder, executing plays a little bit more, did the little things. It’s just something we are going to learn about.”
Meanwhile, the loss marked the NAZ Suns’ third in their last four games, each by three points or less.
“All we needed was one shot,” Toppert said. “We’ve had three games now come down to one defensive stop wins us the basketball game and they're forced to foul…we just can’t get that stop.”
The NAZ Suns (3-4) look to get back in the win column at 3 pm on Sunday, November 26th, against the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in the opening contest of a four-game road stretch.
