PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. – Shawn Limpright’s second-round goal capped off a wild night and sealed a 4-3 shootout win for the Rapid City Rush over the Arizona Sundogs on Monday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in front of a crowd of 3,200.
With the victory, the Rush took the first of a pair of preseason contests between the two clubs.
Goaltenders Scott Reid and Danny Battochio highlighted the first forty minutes of play, combining to stop 45 of 46 shots. Rapid City held a 1-0 advantage through two periods on Scott Wray’s goal in the first.
The offense took center stage in the third as both teams scored five total goals, including each club scoring a pair of tallies less than a minute apart. Craig Macdonald knotted the game for the Sundogs in the opening minute of the third on an unassisted goal. The Rush then jumped out to a 3-1 lead after Carl Hudson scored with 6:52 left in the frame and Les Reaney added one 47 seconds later.
The Sundogs came back to even the score again off a power play strike by rookie Shawn Mortin-Boutin and newcomer J.P. Chabot with just over three minutes to play in regulation. Mortin-Boutin’s and Chabot’s goals were 22 seconds apart.
Limpright, who joined the Rush after playing last season in Bossier-Shreveport, scored the only goal of the shootout while Battachio turned aside all four Sundogs shooters he faced. The Sundogs went 1-for-2 on the power play, while Rapid City was 0-for-3.
Reid took the loss in net for Arizona, despite a 34-save performance. Battachio finished with 32 saves for the Rush.
The two teams will conclude the CHL’s preseason schedule on Tuesday night at 5:35 PST in Rapid City.
