Rapid City Power Play Nips Sundogs in Overtime, 6-5

Second Straight Game Both Teams Play Past Regulation on Tuesday Night

RAPID CITY, SD – The Arizona Sundogs scored three goals in the third period to tie the game, but Jesse Schultz recorded the overtime-winner to give the Rapid City Rush a 6-5 win on Tuesday night at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

Joe Grimaldi (three assists) and Collin Circelli (one goal, two assists) each tallied three-point nights for the Rush, who scored four of their goals on the power play. Kyle Hood, David Nimmo, BJ Crum, and Shawn Mortin-Boutin each had two-point games for the Sundogs.

Trailing 4-2 entering the third, Tyler Butler closed the gap for Arizona just 1:28 in and David Nimmo evened the score with a power play goal four minutes later. Former Sundog, Konrad Reeder, made it a 5-4 lead for the Rush late in the game, but JP Chabot forced overtime with 3:05 remaining in regulation. Mortin-Boutin picked up the assist on Chabot’s goal.

Rapid City built their initial lead in the opening period, scoring three of their four goals on the man-advantage. Circelli started the game’s scoring with an even-strength tally 5:17 into play while Reeder, Shawn Limpright, and Carl Hudson each added a power play goal. Nimmo scored a power play marker halfway through the period for Arizona and Kyle Hood also netted one for a 4-2, Rapid City lead after the first twenty minutes. Hood also picked up an assist on Nimmo’s goal.

Neither team scored in the middle period.

Levente Szuper got the start in net for Arizona making 32 saves in the loss. Tim Boron turned aside 37 shots for the win in the final preseason tune-up for both teams. The Sundogs outshot Rapid City 42-38 in the game.

The two teams combined for six power play goals in the contest as Rapid City went 4-for-6 and the Sundogs were 2-for-4.

Tuesday’s game concludes the Central Hockey League’s preseason schedule. The Sundogs will start the 2011-12 regular season at home on Friday when they host the Laredo Bucks at 7:05 PM.
