Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Merrill Kelly came through with his best effort of the 2019 season as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the New York Mets 7-1, to take two in the three game series.

The thirty year-old who once played at Yavapai College, kept the Mets on their heals for nearly eight innings, allowing only a home run to Wilson Ramos on six hits, while striking out a career high 10 and not allowing a walk.

“I thought everything was built around what Merrill Kelly did today. He established his fastball and he was on the attack and mixed in some good secondary stuff. He was pretty amazing,” said Dback skipper Torey Lovullo. "There was some timely hitting today and that’s D-back baseball."

The D-backs gave Merrill Kelly an early cushion by dropping three runs on the Mets in the bottom of the first. Ketel Marie led off with a home run. Eduardo Escobar followed with a two run blast, scoring Tim Locastro, to make it 3-0.

Wilson Ramos provided the lone Mets highlight with a solo home run in the second to cut the Arizona lead to 3-1.

Christian Walker and Ildemaro Vargas had an RBI single each in the fifth to increase the lead to 5-1. The D-backs added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth on a single by Marte that scored Walker and Vargas.

The D-backs go into a big three game series versus the Dodgers starting tonight. Arizona was won two in a row after a very rough visit to Colorado last week where they dropped all four games, three of those by one run.
